Floral Park: A Great Place to Live
Floral Park is an incorporated village with its own police force. The community is very family oriented. Everyone seems to know each other and that's because families that grew up there remain there when they have their own families. The neighborhood is comprised of homes of various styles and ages standing on 40X100 property. The majority of streets are named after a flower or a tree, adding to the ambience of the village. The two high schools that are part of the village of Floral Park are Floral Park Memorial High School and Sewanhaka High School with a graduation rate of 93%.
The neighborhood of Floral Park in the New York City borough of Queens is adjacent to the village. It is part of the most desirable New York City school district 26, which is considered one of the city's highest achieving districts.
Floral Park adds to its desirability with its low taxes and easy and quick commute to Manhattan on the Long Island Railroad. The housing market offers a wide variety of options to meet the needs of a large or small family.
The area that is now known as Floral Park was called Plainfield at one time. It was marked with farms and tiny villages until the development of the Long Island Railroad Hempstead branch and Jericho Turnpike cut through the area. Prior to being named Floral Park it was know as East Hinsdale. This name change happened after John Lewis Childs started and developed the first seed catalog business. To promote his own business he named the streets after flowers and renamed the area to Floral Park. Floral Park became part of the new county of Nassau County in 1899, and it was incorporated as a village in 1908.
